So....I have a lovely recipe (from a french friend’s mother) for “Vin de Noix” (Walnut Wine) - it’s a liqueur of sorts made while the walnuts are still in their green shells so I need to get going on it now.....BUT, it requires a wine glass’s worth of “eau de vie” and not spotting any in the local supermaket, I decided to ask around.........not a good idea if trying to make friends in rural France - unbeknownst to us it’s completely illegal - although the literal translation is “water of life”, it’s essentially moonshine! That said, through perseverance and having almost lost a few chums in the process, we have now found someone who will talk! And, as it’s completely illegal to sell (sssshhhhh) and as this particular person knows someone who makes it and occasionally takes delivery of a snifter or two for medicinal purposes himself, he will happily get me a wine glass’s worth and donate it to the cause on the proviso that if we're still here in December (this is how long the walnut “wine” takes to macerate), we invite him round for an 'apero'!
Bizarre and yet so brilliant to be part of such subterfuge simply to make an interesting concoction with some of our walnuts!
So there we go - if we’re still here in December - I am likely to have a lovely batch of ‘walnut wine’ but will be unable to tell anyone about it because of the contraband ‘eau de vie’ used in the making of it!
